Top ten reasons to support Newspapers in Education

Posted

Both on the internet and in print, your local community newspaper still has a ton of value, in the classroom and in your life.

The Taos News is hosting a pancake breakfast Saturday (Feb. 23) from 8 to 11 a.m. to raise funds for Newspapers in Education. The breakfast takes place at St. James Episcopal Church, 208 Camino De Santiago, at Gusdorf.

NIE is a national organization that promotes community newspapers in schools.

Here are the top reasons NIE and your community newspaper are worth supporting:

#10

When you buy a ticket to the pancake breakfast, it raises funds through NIE to help provide free newspapers to the classrooms.

#9

Teachers and students can all be reading the same articles at the same time in the classroom and discuss them. Whether it’s the latest sports game, our new quarterly kids’ section or a local election, The Taos News is about local communities and issues that impact kids.

#8

Sure you can print stuff off of the computer, but that costs you money in ink and paper. When kids have access to the newspaper, for free, in their classroom, they can cut out pictures and articles they like, take them home and put them on the refrigerator or in a scrapbook.

#7

It’s another reason for you to buy the newspaper, too. You can cut out and save articles, recipes, tips and photos of your friends, families, maybe even yourself.

#6

Your local newspaper strives through stories and multimedia to help you understand how state and national issues can impact you and your local town.

#5

Your local newspaper works to help you understand the ins and outs of the decisions, people and circumstances that affect your community and you.

#4

When you buy the newspaper, you are supporting more than 15 street vendors who regularly stand out in the cold, sun, rain and shine starting at dawn to bring you the latest local news.

#3

You are supporting more than 50 of your neighbors who work for your local community newspaper, when you support The Taos News and NIE.

#2

We bring you local news week after week, all year-round. You can’t get that level of consistent, local coverage about Taos and Taos County anywhere else.

#1

Supporting your local newspaper, both in print and online, supports democracy. As the Washington Post slogan notes, “Democracy dies in darkness.”

Help bring community news to classrooms. Buy a ticket to the pancake breakfast to benefit NIE. Tickets are $8.50 each for a full breakfast, served to you at your table by your loyal Taos News staff.

Tickets are available from The Taos News, 226 Albright Street, or at the door the day of the event.
