Questa girls' track team takes second at the Questa Invitational

Posted

Questa High School hosted six other schools at the Questa Invitational track meet on Friday (April 12). Escalante, Mora, Evangel Christian Academy, Des Moines Municipal Schools, Springer and Coronado all traveled to the meet for the afternoon.

The Questa girls won 133 points at the meet, behind only Escalante's 139. Mora finished third with 113 points and a wide margin between them and fourth place.

The meet began under chilly gray skies with athletes wrapped in blankets huddled in small groups about the field. The Questa team even had a large propane heater that offered them a small refuge from the chill.

Though the sun peeked through occasionally and gave fans, judges and athletes a respite from the cold, on the whole it was a cold spring afternoon.

Girls head coach Deluvina Sanchez viewed the meet as an opportunity to gauge the capabilities of her athletes. In some cases, such as the 3200-meter race for which the Questa runners were not conditioned and could not continuously run, this seemed a difficult experience for the girls. One athlete was not able to finish the race, which lasted 27 minutes 34.52 seconds - unusually long for that distance. In some cases, the athletes had more success.

Below are some highlights of the girls' successes.

Kiana Passino took second in the 100-meter run with a time of 13.72 seconds. Christina Cisneros took fifth. Leah Martinez finished fourth in the 200 meters and Passino finished third in the 400 meters in 69.4 seconds. Rebecca Medina, Emelina Medina and Ashleigh Archuleta finished the 800 meters and Karina Rael, Mikaela Romero and Araceli Gonzales finished the 1600 meters and Rael got second place.

The 4 x 100 relay team finished first of four teams. The 4 x 200 finished third of three, 4 x 400 relay second of two and the sprint medley relay finished second of two only 3.6 seconds behind Escalante.

Questa hurdlers Anastacia Gonzales and Aalyiah Martinez took fifth and sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and Gonzales got fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

The field events saw some strong performances from Questa athletes. Cherise Trujillo won third in discus with a 73 foot throw, just 2 feet 7 inches off the winning distance. Jordyn Martinez cleared 4 feet 2 inches in the high jump, enough for sixth place and only four inches below the 4 feet 6 inches cleared by Aubrie Hinds of Escalante for first. Three athletes, Sasha Martinez, Aalyiah Martinez and Cardenas threw javelin and all five athletes to compete in the pole vault were Ladycats. Anastacia Gonzalez cleared 7 feet even and Rebecca Medina 6 feet 6 inches. Araceli Gonzales, Rael and Lovato took third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Sasha Martinez took fourth in shot put and Passino, Monica Molina and Jordyn Martinez finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the long jump from a large pool. Anastacia Gonzales and Christina Cisneros finished third and fourth in the triple jump.

Results for the boys were not available at press time.
