Kit Carson Cooperative to unveil electric car-charging ports

Posted

Kit Carson Electric Cooperative is staying one step ahead of the future transportation game and is inviting the public to join in the opening of its solar electric car chargers.

Recent developments in electric cars have caused a surge in popularity in the vehicles and that surge is hitting Taos. Demand has risen for the charge ports in Taos and Kit Carson is helping the community get ready to help visitors and locals keep their cars powered.

"We just want to be prepared and we wanted to make it more attractive for people with electric vehicles to enjoy Taos," said Kit Carson spokesman Michael Santistevan.

According to Santistevan, the solar-powered charge ports were donated to the co-op and will have free charging during the daytime hours.

The growing popularity of electric vehicles has caused their charge ports to pop up even in rural locations. There are a few in Taos and Taos Ski Valley and Santistevan said more may be in the works for the future.

The event will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday (April 24) at KTAO Solar Center, 9 NM 150, and is free for the public to attend. Taos County and town of Taos officials will be present to speak about the charging stations.

There will be additional charging stations at Eco Park and at Kit Carson's main offices.
