Taos County Democrats are hosting what they are calling the "political event of the year" by bringing both Democratic candidates vying for Senate to town for the evening.

U.S Congressman Ben Ray Luján and New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver will meet with the community on Nov. 8 at UNM-Taos Bataan Hall at 7 p.m. for consecutive town hall meetings to answer questions from constituents. Both are running for the seat Senator Tom Udall will be vacating in 2020 after he announced he would not seek a third term.

Lions Club announces winners of grants

In the spirit of helping the community, the Taos Lions Club has announced the recipients of its Lions Club Gives to Kids grants.

The club will be distributing $7,000 to 14 local nonprofits serving the youth of Taos.

Each nonprofit will be honored at the annual luncheon ceremony on Oct. 17 at the Sagebrush Inn Conference Center, 1508 Paseo del Pueblo Sur. The event will start at 11:30 a.m. and tickets for the event may be purchased for $22 from the club by calling (575) 644-8099.

Free legal advicefor seniors

The Legal Resources for the Elderly Program will host an informational workshop for interested seniors in Taos.

The event will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 30 at University of New Mexico-Taos Bataan Hall.

Legal information will be available regarding power of attorney, estate planning, transfer of death deeds and other topics.

The workshop is free to attend and the program will have an attorney on-site after the presentations for questions.
