I am told that an opinion piece should be a personal opinion, rather than a free political marketing ploy. With that in mind, and because I do work for Betsy Musselman’s campaign for District Judge, I will endeavor to speak to what I know of her in my personal experience.
I first met Betsy Musselman when I hired her as divorce attorney in 1996, 24 years ago. Betsy told me then, “There is no winning in divorce,” and that was a great disapointment for me. I didn’t really understand New Mexico law – but she did. Nevertheless, I felt that I had won with her seasoned legal experience at my side. At one point in my divorce process, she coached: “If you think you have let go, then dig deeper and let go more.” She is kind that way, and I really felt listened to and honored by her. I’ve heard many of her clients say the same thing about Betsy.
Many years later, I found myself in Betsy's office again, this time as an independent researcher. I discovered that, not only had she retained all those skills that made her such a wonderful attorney in the past – compassion, an innate sense of fairness, that like-a-knife sharpness – but she had become wiser still. I would find that Betsy has 38 years of legal experience in New Mexico courtrooms, has practiced in many many fields of the law – civil, criminal, family-law, women’s rights, real estate, etc. and she has supported thousands of victims of domestic violence. From 1998 to 2006 she was Domestic Relations Hearing Officer and Domestic Violence Commissioner presiding in Taos, Colfax and Union Counties. She not only has experience as a defense attorney and litigator, she was the former Town of Taos Prosecutor. Most law school graduates never litigate in an actual courtroom.
I worked with Betsy as a researcher for more than a year, watching her in attorney/client meetings, litigating in the courtroom, participating in mediation sessions, writing motions, attending hearings. She is brilliant – extremely quick to comprehend and discern. You do not have to tell Betsy something twice. She doesn’t miss a thing and knows what to do. She is whip-smart and a woman of steel.
Over years of knowing Betsy, the quality that strikes me the most about her is her willingness to collaborate in an unbiased, ethical and fair way. Everyone pays an attorney to fight for them. I am a fighter myself. I hit first and ask questions later. Not Betsy. She watches. She listens. She discerns. She finds an entry point of accord and makes her move into that. It is incredible to watch. Each and every time an opposing attorney strikes a blow (and to my dismay, I’ve recently discovered that opposing political candidates can also strike blows), Betsy takes the high road. That’s what we want in a judge – a good, ethical human being who knows the law.
When Betsy asked me to work on her campaign last winter, I jumped in wholeheartedly, without reservation.
She has the compassion, fairness, experience, temperament, and ethics to be our next District Judge.
