Viviendo humildes doesn't mean living como marranos

Después de nevar por muchos días the sun came out and began to melt todo ese snowfall.

Canutito had wanted to go out y jugar en la nieve pero no había suficiente snow ni tan siquiera para hacer un snowman. By the time que llegó pa'la yarda no había nada más que charcos of mud puddles spread out all over the yard. He stepped into the mud slush y lo sintió todo squishy debajo de sus zapatos. Soon he had manchas de zoquete splattered all over his pants. He looked down y miró las mud stains dotting sus calzones and he just knew que Grama Cuca was going to scold him but hard y a él no le gustaba escuchar sus regañadas. He sat down por un momento a ver si podía hacer come up con una excusa.

"Maybe I could tell her que me resbalé and as a result of that slip, I fell en el mero charco and got all muddy," Canutito said to himself. Pero even before he had finished de pensar de lo que iba a decir, he knew que su grama iba a saber que he was lying. He decided que iba a cambiar su historia: "I suppose that I can tell her que it was raining cats and dogs y que los gatos y los perros got into a fight y que cuando I tried to separate them, me dejaron full of mud." Again, su mentira didn't make any sense; he just wasn't good at lying.

"What I have to do," he said to himself, "es de pensar just like grama thinks. "Maybe if I come up con algo religioso de la Bible, she will believe me." Suddenly he had the perfect excuse; he walked hacia la cocina con confianza. Just as he walked in, Grama Cuca vino pa'la cocina and saw Canutito tracking mud por todo el suelo. Había zoquete all over the place.

"¡Jesús. Mil veces!" she exclaimed. "¿Cómo te enzoquetates tanto?" (She was fit to be tied). "¡Pareces un marrano straight out of el trochil!"

"I may look just like a pig en el pigpen, grama, "Canutito began, "pero actually I was just following el advice de Dios to Adam en la Biblia: Después de que había hecho sin, God told him: "Remember Man that you are mud and unto mud you shall return. Y como ayer era Ash Wednesday, y es el tiempo que nos hace remind a todos that we will all return to the earth again algún día, I thought que I would get un jump start and get reacquainted with the mud."

"Actually," Grama Cuca corrected him, mientras que mopeaba el suelo, "what God said era: 'Acuérdate hombre que polvo eres y a polvo volverás'."

"Well, mud is just wet dust, grama," Canutito said, defendiéndose. "It is good to remember de dónde somos and to try to live más humildes."

"Viviendo humildes does not mean que we have to live like pigs," grama said between clenched teeth. "It means que we should live como buenas personas, doing cosas buenas and helping out a todos nuestros vecinos."

"What should I do, grama?" Canutito asked, "para ayudarle a mis neighbors?"

"Well, you can start con ayudarme a limpiar todo este zoquete that you tracked into the kitchen," Grama Cuca replied, dándole su mop al muchachito.

Canutito mopped the mud as he muttered: "Por mi culpa, por mi culpa, por mi gran culpa"…
