Thirty-eight players participated in the Valle Open Tournament in support of the Río Fernando Fire Department at Valle Escondido Golf Course on July 27. Each foursome in the flighted individual tournament with men's and women's divisions started its nine holes at hole one.
Ron Stock won the men's open championship with an even-par of 36, and the women's open champion was Karen Fornier with a 44. The first flight, first-place winners were Mark Johnson, also with a 36, and Elaine Bright. Bright also tied the club champ with a 44, and the El Valle Open handicapping algorithm assigned lower scores to Stock and Fornier on certain holes. Prizes were awarded to the first and second finishers in each flight. Manager Ed Fogarty of El Valle Escondido praised the condition of the course, which he attributes to the hard work of Scott Boomer, Carl Stewart and Martin Kulp.
The contour of the Valle Escondido golf course is similar to the highlands in Scotland, with plenty of hills but no lochs. For many years, they've hosted a Tartan Tourney. The four-person scramble tournament with men's and mixed divisions takes place on Aug. 17, and participants are encouraged to wear a kilt. The festive Scottish atmosphere is enhanced by a bagpiper, haggis and possible Robert Burns readings. The public is always welcome to play in the tournaments and at any time during the week.
