Taos County athletes take top two spots in Los Alamos junior event

Posted

The junior division of the Los Alamos Triathlon for racers not older than 16 follows the same unusual bike, swim, run format as the full-length sprint triathlon.

That format seemed to serve Gilbert 'Gilly' Valdez, rising sophomore at Peñasco Independent Schools, and Maddox Padberg, a seventh-grader from Taos Academy, just fine. They took first and second place, respectively, in the July 20 race.

For the junior division of the Los Alamos Triathlon, the first leg was 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) on the bike. The athletes next hopped into the pool for a 400-meter (approximately quarter-mile) swim in which the athletes snaked their way through eight lanes of a 50-meter pool. Finally, they slipped their shoes on for a 5K (3.1 mile) run.

Valdez, age 15, crossed the finish line in under half an hour with a time of 29:56. Padberg, age 12, came through next, in 36:38.
