Cordova said the man who is believed to have started the fire had been burning trash without a permit
Three homes caught fire and burned in Cerro near Questa on Tuesday (July 9) after a barrel where a man was burning trash tipped over, according to Taos County Fire Chief Michael Cordova.
Cordova said a caller reported that the barrel had tipped over around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, igniting some dry brush at the property.
Similar to a fire that burned a home in Costilla on Friday (July 5), wind gusts caused what began as a small fire on Tuesday to spread to nearby structures, eventually engulfing the three homes.
Two of the houses were occupied, but people inside the homes were able to escape without injury. The third home was vacant.
A total of 55 emergency workers, including firemen, law enforcement, medics, Forest Service personnel and incident command staff worked to control the flames, but all three homes were ultimately destroyed in the fire.
Cordova said the man who is believed to have started the fire had been burning trash without a permit, but the fire chief did not indicate whether the man would face criminal charges.
