Taos Tigers take early lead in District 2-4A with win over rival Horsemen

Double overtime is needed to determine a winner in this year's match, Martinez produces for Taos


The Taos Tigers extended their winning streak to three after defeating the St. Michael's Horsemen (7-12, 1-1) in double-overtime on their own court Jan. 19.

Taos visited Perez-Shelley Memorial Gymnasium in Santa Fe tied with the Horsemen in District 2-4A at 1-0, and came away with a crucial victory to take the top spot in the league and move to 11-9 overall. Earlier in the week, the Tigers beat the Pojoaque Valley Elks in convincing fashion at home in the district opener.

Several turnovers by Taos in the first half resulted in a one point deficit by halftime, which turned into an eight-point deficit for the Tigers late in the third period. A fourth quarter charge, however, led to a 12-7 Tiger run to tie the game in regulation and force overtime.

It would require two more stanzas to determine a winner as the two foes were unable to put the game away for good in the first overtime. – each scoring just seven points and each squandering opportunities to take the outright lead.

Strong play in the second overtime from Taos' big man, Allen Martinez, helped garner the lead and the win for the surging Tigers. Martinez finished the night with 19 points – leading all Taos scorers with a plethora of points from inside the paint, and from long range as well. Abdul Khweis pumped in an additional 18 points, and Derrick Chacon was good for 15 on the evening – including a key baseline jumper late in regulation to force overtime.

The next test for Taos is right around the corner, as Coach Nando Chavez and company travel to West Las Vegas to take on the Dons (10-9, 1-0) Jan. 24. West is coming off a 70-52 win over cross-town rival Robertson and is poised to challenge Taos for the early district lead. Varsity game time is tentatively set for 7 p.m.
