Taos magistrate judge appointed to district court

Posted

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham this week appointed Taos Magistrate Court Judge Jeff Shannon to fill a vacancy left by former Eighth Judicial District Court Judge Jeff McElroy, who retired from the bench in Taos on Oct. 31.

Tripp Stelnicki, a spokesperson for the governor's office, confirmed Shannon's appointment via email Thursday evening (Nov. 21).

Shannon, a graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, was first elected magistrate judge in 2012. He most recently won re-election in 2018 after running on a platform that emphasized fair treatment, thorough background checks and taking a hard line on drunk driving and child abuse cases.

"I am excited and happy with the appointment and looking forward to moving to an office upstairs and especially happy about being back in Children's Court after nearly eight years away," Shannon said.

Lujan Grisham's appointment of Shannon now requires another, as his seat in Taos Magistrate Court will also have to be filled.
