Track

The Tigers competed in the Bloomfield Invite Friday and Saturday (May 3-4). Results were not available at press time Tuesday.

The track district meet is scheduled for Friday (May 10) at Moriarty High School, and many athletes have already qualified for state the weekend of May 17-18.

Questa

Baseball

The Wildcats hosted Peñasco for a double-header Wednesday (May 1) with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Panthers won the first game 5-4 and the Wildcats took the second 15-3. Questa got shut out by the defending state champions from Mora Saturday (May 4) 22-0.

Track

The district track meet was held in Escalante on Friday (May 3). See 2A District Track below.

Peñasco

Baseball

The Peñasco Panthers played a double-header in Questa Wednesday (May 1) with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The Panthers won the first game 5-4 and the Wildcats took the second 15-3.

Track

2A State District Track Meet

All athletes who placed either first or second qualify for the state championship meet in Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico Friday and Saturday (May 10-11).

Boys

Miguel Romero of Questa finished second in the 100 meter dash and first in the triple jump; Juaquine Fernandez of Peñasco finished fourth and Gabriel Hernandez of Questa came in fifth. Fernandez also finished sixth in the 200, second in the 400, second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Justin Rael of Questa finished sixth in the 400.

Gilbert Valdez of Peñasco won the 1600 meters and the 3200 meters, came in second in the 800 and sixth in the triple jump. Mateo Medina of Questa came in fifth in the 800, and the Questa team composed of Miguel Romero, Derek Vialpando, Gabriel Hernandez and Dominic Torrez won the sprint medley relay. The Questa team also came in third in the 4 x 400 relay and in the 4 x 100 meter relay and second in the 4 x 200.

Elijah Lucero of Peñasco finished fourth in the discus, and Vialpando of Questa finished second in the javelin, with DJ Maldonado and Hernandez in third and fourth. Peñasco's Danny Esquibel finished sixth. Tate Danis finished fourth in the long jump. Mateo Medina and Matt Rael of Questa went 1-2 in the pole vault.

Girls

From Questa, Kiana Passino finished third in the 100 meter dash and fourth in the 200; Christina Cisneros finished fifth in the 100. Lady Panther Naomi Snake finished sixth in the 400 meters. Carly Gonzales of Peñasco took second in the 800 and Emily Ortiz of Questa finished sixth.

Peñasco took four of the six places in the 1600: Gonzales came in first with a time of 6:19.62 and Maricela Macauley was right behind her with a time of 6:19.78. Adrianna Tafoya came in fifth and Rhyen Vigil finished sixth. Macauley won the 3200 meters, with Vigil in third, Tafoya in fourth, and Ortiz and Medina of Questa in fifth and sixth.

Questa won the 4 x 100 meter relay with a team of Leah Martinez, Cisneros, Molina and Passino; second in the 4 x 200 meter relay with a team of Martinez, Cisneros, Jordyn Martinez and Passino, third in the sprint medley relay and fourth in the 4 x 400.

Peñasco finished fourth in 4 x 100 meter relay, second in the sprint medley relay and third in the 4 x 400 relay.

Of Questa, Anastacia Gonzales placed third in the 100 meter hurdles and Monica Molina finished sixth. In the 300 meter hurdles, Jennifer Aguilar of Peñasco finished fifth and Monica Molina of Questa finished sixth.

Ladycat Cherise Trujillo won the discus and Lady Panther Naomi Snake took third. Trujillo took fourth in the shot put and Snake won sixth. In javelin, Alexandra Sandoval of Peñasco took third, and Arianna Ortega and Clarissa Arellano, both of Questa, took fourth and sixth, respectively.

Questa took first through fourth in the pole vault: Rebecca Medina first, then Araceli Gonzales, Karina Rael and Anastacia Gonzales. Annaliese Rivera of Questa took fifth in high jump and Passino and Molina took fifth and sixth in long jump. In the triple jump, Anastacia Gonzales finished second, Panthers Aguilar and Macauley third and fourth, and Cisneros and Rivera fifth and sixth.
