Success Story: Weathergard Windows & Doors


The old saying, “Patience is a virtue,” not only applies in life but also in business. Sometimes it’s tempting to rashly react to market conditions and veer off the course that got you where you are.

Through the thick-and-thin of the last 15 years, Weathergard Windows & Doors has never wavered from its commitment to providing top-quality windows and doors at affordable prices for 15 years — and the local Taos firm is reaping the benefits of persistence.

“We pride ourselves as a unique business,” said Weathergard co-owner Mark Gonzales. “It’s always been our niche to provide a range of products at good prices, and of going above and beyond to serve our customers.”

One facet of Weathergard’s success has been its ability to adjust to the local market by taking advantage of shifts and trends in home improvements by incorporating new products and services into its way of doing business.

For example, early on the business changed its name from The Window Depot to Weathergard Windows & Doors to reflect an expansion of what they offered. Later, as a hedge against a slow local market, Weathergard extended its market reach beyond Taos — to Santa Fe, Angel Fire and into southern Colorado. The product line, which is not just windows, includes interior and exterior doors, custom doors, skylights, shades and blinds, and full-service maintenance and repair.

“We didn’t want to be known as just a window shop, so we made sure people knew that with our name,” said Gonzales, a native Taoseño. “And, we’ll go anywhere. Our brand, pricing and reputation is what helps get the jobs for us.”

A majority of Weathergard’s business these days is in remodeling — specifically, for local and second homes in the Taos area. That market has loosened up ahead of new construction, said Gonzales, prompting his company to further expand its offerings.

“Many local and second-home owners want upgrades and remodels to their homes, but don’t have the time or luxury to coordinate and follow the work,” said Gonzales. “As a result, we do more at the house than ever before: window-door hardware upgrades, changing glass, caulking and resealing windows and doors, re-screening, staining and resealing lintels.

“It’s pretty much anything to do with weatherization,” he said. “People can call us and say, ‘Please get it done,’ and it gets done. We want people to know that when they come back next trip, their house will be in top shape through striving to be a one-stop shopping experience for home beautification.”

A significant part of Weathergard’s success can be traced to becoming a dealer for Simonton, a major manufacturer of windows and doors for commercial and residential uses. Weathergard’s exclusive territory runs from Albuquerque to southern Colorado. Being a top Simonton dealer also means timely delivery of all products, even custom manufactured windows and doors. If it’s standard size, or maybe even a custom size, a vinyl product will arrive at the Weathergard shop in 7 to 10 working days.

Simonton continues to develop new products for its dealers, and Weathergard always has a display of the latest items in its showroom at 613 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. Some of the latest products are:

• Vinyl windows. They have a lifetime warranty and are maintenance-free. For solar-conscious homeowners, these windows do not transfer heat and cold into the house (like aluminum windows), and stay at room temperature on the inside.

• Fiberglass doors. This “wave of the future” product acts and looks like wood, but doesn’t require the attention that wooden doors do. They can be painted and stained. But they have a much higher U-Factor (insulation) and require no maintenance once they are installed.

• ProSolar LowE glass. This new coating on double-pane windows suits sunny Taos by retaining sun-produced heat during the cold months and deflecting it during the warm times — all increasing the U-Factor rating in a house.

• Solar roller shades. These fabric window shades reduce ultraviolet rays and heat from the outside by absorbing heat and cooling rooms.

In order to stay successful, Gonzales, his two full-time employees and part-time sons never sit still. As the market continues to grow and change, so does Weathergard. There are upcoming plans to continue to grow with the market in the areas of commercial glass construction and renovation.

The company remains firmly tied to Taos and works hard to keep its local customers coming back. Pricing remains as affordable as possible — often honoring prices from year to year — in order to help out the locals who have kept the business successful for a decade and a half.

“People feel more comfortable now to put some money into their homes,” said Gonzales. “To keep their business, we have to do whatever we can to help them out. Whether large or small, we take care of our customers’ needs in Taos and beyond.”
