Questa school board to vote Tuesday evening on Rio Costilla school closure

The Questa school board has scheduled a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 17) to vote on whether to permanently close Rio Costilla Southwest Learning Academy, the tiny but high-performing elementary school that has been at the center of controversy for several years.
Superintendent Michael Lovato, who recently resigned his position, ordered the school to close temporarily just before the current school year started based on what he called a "health and safety emergency.” According to New Mexico statutes, a superintendent has sole discretion to close a school that presents a threat to the health or safety of students and staff. Members of the Costilla community said in a public meeting they believe this is the board’s latest ploy to close their school as a cost-cutting measure.
Some speculate that Lovato’s Sept. 4 resignation and plan to vacate his office Sept. 20 have prompted this sudden move to close the school permanently.
