Questa boys track moving forward together

The Questa boys track team is small, around 10 members - four seniors, one junior and the rest eighth-graders and freshmen - but they are consistently placing well in meets, sometimes against teams with twice the number of athletes.

"I believe in the group," boys' head coach Miguel Romero said of his team.

Although the varsity team is half underclassman, coach Romero likes to stress that "at any age, you can be competitive. Any given day, you can be competitive."

In this spirit, the Wildcats hosted seven other teams Friday (April 12). Here are some of the highlights of the competition for Questa boys.

Student athlete Miguel Romero, son of coach Romero, won the 100-meter dash with an excellent time of 11.4 seconds and took third in the 200 meter run with a time of 25.25 seconds. Ethan Rivera took second in the 400 meters, and Questa runners Justin Rael placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and DJ Maldonado placed sixth in the 300 meter hurdles.

The boys took third in each of the 4 x 100 meter, 4 x 200 meter and 4 x 400 meter relays and won the sprint medley relay.

It was a great day for field events, too. Tate Danis finished third in the long jump with 18 feet 6 inches and second in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet 3.5 inches. Mateo Medina finished second in the pole vault, Josh Arguello placed sixth in the shot put, and Questa boys Derek Vialpando, DJ Maldonado and Ethan Rivera placed third, fourth and fifth in the javelin throw, respectively.
