Power outage affects south side of Taos

Walmart, Allsup's impacted

Posted

A power outage impacted parts of the south end of Taos Friday morning (Nov. 22), causing power failures at the southside Allsup's gas station and Walmart, which temporarily closed when its computers shut down.

The outage is related to a snowstorm that dropped around 3 inches in Taos into Thursday night (Nov. 21), according to Luis Reyes, CEO at Kit Carson Electric Cooperative, the utility that powers the grid in Taos.

"This occurs as snow falls off the lines and lines then gallop and sometimes slap," Reyes said via email Friday.

Reyes said the outage impacted the area of Salazar Road and Camino de Merced, which still has "partial power."

Staff stood outside of Walmart Friday morning telling a steady stream of customers "we're closed."

A backup generator provided power to keep lights on inside, but the store was unable to immediately bring its computers back online, preventing them from processing payments, according to staff.
