From the annual Pancake Breakfast on the historic Taos Plaza, provided free by Taos Mayor Dan Barrone and family, to parades, a rock concert and booming fireworks display, Taos celebrated Independence Day in a big way.

More than  100 people started off their day with a hardy meal at the Pancake Breakfast with officials such as Mayor Dan Barrone, Taos Police Chief David Trujillo, Taos County Commissioner and retired firefighter Jim Fambro and Lt. Gov. Howie Morales all pitching in to flip flap jacks, sizzle sausage and hand out plates.

The event included prayers and speeches by Taos Pueblo Gov. Richard Aspenwind and War Chief Bernard Lujan, a presentation of 12 hand-made quilts to a dozen local veterans by the Taos Quilt and Needlecraft Guild and a performance by the Star Road Dance Company from Taos Pueblo.

A veterans craft and art fair was held nearby at the nonprofit Not Forgotten Outreach across from Cid's Natural Grocers and continues through Saturday.

More than 1,000 people finished out the evening at Kit Carson Park dancing, singing and clapping to the sounds of Bones of Romeo, Ozomatli and WAR and enjoying a fireworks display organized by the Taos Fire Department.

The festivities continue with concerts at the park tonight (July 5) and Saturday (July 6).
