Peñasco Valley, Dixon seed swap coming Sunday

Posted

Join farmers, gardeners and seed enthusiasts in the southern part of Taos County for the second annual Peñasco/Dixon Area Seed Swap this Sunday (March 3).

The seed exchange and educational event will happen between noon and 2 p.m. at the Embudo Valley Library Community Center, 217 State Road 75, in Dixon.

Regionally grown seeds and bulbs can be traded with other folks in attendance, but the organizers ask that no genetically modified or hybrid seeds be brought to the exchange.

The event should attract quite a seed-centered crowd. "The Dixon community has some very dedicated seed savers and leaders in the field," said Embudo librarian Shirley Atencio.

People can learn "how to become a seed steward for our region's rare and endangered crops," read a flyer for the event.

The seed swap will also feature other educational handouts and information about open-pollinated and landrace seeds, seed starting and saving, pollinators and efforts for a resolution to stop pesticide use near acequias.

The main library is also home to a seed library -- an old wooden card catalog where locals can check out seeds, grow them out and return seeds to the library.

Contact librarian@embudovalleylibrary.org or call (505) 579-9181 for more information.
