Lady Panthers undefeated in the district

Conference games wrapped up this weekend, leaving a likelihood of a rematch between the Peñasco Lady Panthers (10-0) and the Questa Ladycats (6-4) for the district 5-2A title next weekend. Maxpreps currently ranks the Lady Panthers the top 2A girls' team in the state. The Ladycats, whose performance has been steadily improving all season, are ranked 18th.

Peñasco has incurred only three losses this season: a 61-40 loss to 5A Deming early in the season, a 51-37 loss to 4A Pojoaque Valley on Dec. 22 and the final of the Northern Río Grande Championship tournament to Pecos, 57-54.

The Peñasco vs. Questa game Feb. 23 was also Seniors' Night and Parent Appreciation Night for Peñasco. The ceremony was held before the 4 p.m. boys' varsity game. Each player was given a rose to take to his or her family before the seniors were honored by their teams. The two seniors on the girls' team, Bianca Contreras and Alaska Lopez, were given roses, keepsakes and sustained applause from the crowd, who has loved them and cheered them on since they were varsity starters as eighth-graders.

The Questa Ladycats were able to hang in the game for a while, but not long enough. Eventually the Lady Panthers pulled away to their 80-56 win.
