NM opens the doors on hemp growers

Posted

Hemp is in. After years of lobbying efforts, growing hemp has been approved in the Land of Enchantment. Applications are open for interested farmers and producers.

The Continuous Hemp Production Application, which is intended for greenhouses and plant nursery operations, and the Annual Hemp Production Application, which is meant for annual crops grown outdoors, are available at the New Mexico Department of Agriculture website.

According to Kristie García, public information officer for the department, "Once a license is issued, the expiration date will be Jan. 31, 2020."

Hemp, though related to cannabis, is grown with a lower concentration of THC, a psychoactive chemical, than marijuana. The state does not limit the number of hemp-growing licenses, plants or acreage devoted to the crop.
