Luella Kramer of Taos and her sister Dora Gunckel of Albuquerque competed side by side in the women's bowling doubles in the National Senior Games on Tuesday (June 18) at the Starlight Bowling Center in Bernalillo, New Mexico.

"It was a great experience," Kramer said, "but we didn't place in the finals."

In order to be eligible for the National Games, athletes must place first, second, third or fourth in their state games. The duo of Kramer and Gunckel qualified last year (July 20, 2018) in the New Mexico Senior Games.

On Wednesday (June 19) the sisters walked in the Parade of Athletes at The Pit in Albuquerque. "This was an amazing event where every state was represented," Kramer said. "Each state came down one aisle of The Pit and went to the assigned seats. Then we, the athletes of the state of New Mexico, as the host for this year's National Senior Games, came bursting out of the main tunnel where the University of New Mexico Lobos come out for their basketball games.

"Walking down the Lobo ramp along with hundreds of our New Mexico athletes was so very exciting. The high level of energy from these athletes was amazing to hear while in the tunnel and very impressive," Kramer said.

Speakers welcomed all the athletes and thanked them for participating and for showing such a great spirit and being an example of what seniors can do.

The 2019 Senior Games had 13,712 registered participants - a 30% increase over the 2017 games in Birmingham, Alabama.
