For amateur golfers out there eager to try on their newly acquired golf outfits and equipment and to do their part to support a noble cause, the Toast of Taos golf tournament is ready for all-comers June 24.
At the sound of the shotgun blast or other noisemaker, players will begin their quest to conquer the crisscrossed fairways and greens of Taos Country Club - an 18-hole adventure undertaken with their teammates surrounded by aromatic wafts of morning chamiso. This best ball tournament will be played on the challenging course to reveal this year's lowest overall stroke score team and to kick off the Lions Club of Taos' big fundraising event.
The Toast of Taos is a three-part event that includes the golf tournament, a wine festival and silent auction supporting all the various programs and community events held by the Taos Lions Club.
In the organization's 90th year of serving Taos County, the Lions Club of Taos and its 50 dedicated members have worked to fulfill their mission to serve their community through programs such as KidSight, Taos County Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, college and technical school scholarships, Adult Vision, AVID mentoring program and the Tio Vivo merry-go-round. All of the proceeds from the Toast of Taos go to fund these core endeavors.
Sold out in 2016, the popular golf tournament has had an impressive run since restarting eight years ago. "Part of the draw to this tournament are the side prizes awarded to men and women in their respective groups in our 'Dixon Golf Challenges' for longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one," said Dennis Scott, tournament director, who noted that the field of participants is limited to 120. "Plus, we give out gift bags full of goodies, a box lunch for golfers and the chance to buy up to four 'mulligans' per team.
"This year, golfers have the chance to win a 2017 Chevrolet Trax from Friday Motors if they hit an ace on hole No. 11," said Scott, who alluded that the feat has yet to be accomplished in the history of the Toast of Taos golf tournament. "Perhaps this is the year that lady luck will tap a deserving golfer."
Start time of the tournament will be 9 a.m., which will be followed by the wine festival and silent auction at 2 p.m. Wine connoisseurs can mingle with winemakers while enjoying culinary delights from Taos' finest restaurants and caterers. Music will be provided by Dread Fermata to augment the silent auction, which features numerous gift certificates, travel packages, works by notable artisans, fine wines and gourmet meals.
Cost to enter the tournament is $98 for Taos Country Club members and $148 for nonmembers. The fee includes entry into the wine festival.
For golf registration, contact assistant golf professional Phillipe Kim at the Taos Country Club via phone at (575) 758-7300. For more information about the wine festival or to buy tickets, visit ToastOfTaos.com or contact Mike Hess at (575) 758-1681.
