Helen Verser Lowry of Albuquerque passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the age of 89. Born on Jan. 21, 1930 in Nottoway County, VA, Helen was the tenth of eleven children of James and Kate Verser. After her parents’ death in 1937, the Presbyterian Orphanage Home in Lynchburg, VA raised her with a handful of her siblings. She attended Montreat College in NC for two years before graduating from Riverside School of Nursing in Newport News, VA in 1952. In 1971 Helen obtained her BSN from Hampton University in 1971. Tirelessly devoting her time and energy to those in need, Helen began her career at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia assisting the mentally ill, then Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville, Virginia helping the aged, before helping our nation’s veterans at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and the Raymond G. Murphy Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Helen is survived by four children: Libby Blanton (spouse Richard) of Farmville, Virginia; Terry Lowry (spouse George Athens) of Gallup, New Mexico; Marc Lowry (spouse Julie McIntryre) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Christine Lowry of Taos, New Mexico; as well as five grandchildren: Carmen Athens, Elise Athens, Aleta Athens, Eva Lowry, and Shayden Lowry along with too many nieces and nephews to count. She is survived by her good friend and ex-husband, Ed Lowry. An active member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church for 27 years, Helen was renowned as a kind, loving and spirited person who opened her arms to everyone she crossed paths with. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019.
