A fire from unknown causes was reported Friday afternoon (June 21) burning about 7 mies northwest of El Rito, west of Abiguiu Reservoir, on the Carson National Forest.
The Potrero fire has burned about 12 acres in a forested area north of Potrero Falls. Forest officials report moderate fire behavior with some potential for growth. A total of four engines, a hand crew and a helicopter have responded.
Smoke from the Potrero fire will likely be visible from El Rito and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, the lightning-cause Gurule fire west of El Rito Canyon, also near Abiquiu, had grown to about 2,360 acres by Saturday morning (June 22). Fire crews are monitoring the fire. Gusty winds brought by a cold front moving in to the area was expected to make the fire more active Saturday evening.
Drones are temporarily banned from flying over the fire area.
People sensitive to smoke and those with heart or respiratory problems are urged to take precautions when smoke is in the air.
