Election packets ready for council candidates

Election season is around the corner, and candidate packets are now available from Taos town clerk Francella Garcia.

Candidates will have until Jan. 7, 2020 to make a formal declaration of candidacy to the clerk's office if they wish to be on the ballot for the March 3 municipal election.

In this election two council seats are up for grabs with both councilors Nathaniel Evans and Darien Fernandez possibly looking at a challenge.

Evans was elected in 2016 and has already expressed his intent to retain his seat.

"I really want to finish a lot of projects that I've been involved in," Evans said. "I want to be able to say I took care of the people of Taos and gave our youth more opportunity."

Fernandez, elected in 2016, also said he plans to run again for his seat. "There is still work to be done," Fernandez said. "I am pushing for enhanced recreational opportunities for our community's youth."

Fernandez ran for mayor in 2018 against Mayor Dan Barrone.

Those interested must get a candidate handbook from the town clerk, meet the qualifications and make their declaration by Jan. 7. They will then have until Jan. 14 to withdraw their application if they change their mind.

Elected winners will take office on April 1, 2020.
