Candlelight vigil for shooting victim to be held at Kit Carson Park

'This is for justice'

A candlelight vigil will be held this evening at Kit Carson Park in memory of Destiny M. Valdez, a 23-year-old Ranchos de Taos mother who was fatally wounded last year during a shooting at a gas station in Taos.

Valdez's mother, Lupita Rodarte, said that the purpose of the vigil is to remember her daughter, who is survived by a four-year-old son.

"I want people who knew Destiny to light a candle, say a prayer and share something they remember about her," Rodarte said.

Theresa Chacon, who was close friends with Valdez, said that she expects hundreds of friends, family and other supporters to attend the memorial.

Chacon hopes that the gathering will also raise awareness of the upcoming trial for Valdez's alleged murderer, Brandon Lopez, who is scheduled to appear before a jury in Taos District Court on May 14.

"This is for justice," Chacon said. "We want to keep her memory alive."
