As the sky darkened and thunder rumbled ominously, Run for the Wall riders, family members and visitors listened intently as guest speakers recounted the often devastating stories behind each of this year's Medal of Honor recipients that were recognized with the installation of eight black bricks at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire this past Saturday (Aug. 31).

The solemn ceremony was part of a daylong annual Labor Day weekend event that was also a reunion for participants of the Run for the Wall motorcycle ride, which passes through Angel Fire every spring on the riders' way to Memorial Day Weekend ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

Beginning at 8:45 a.m. with a Blessing of the Bricks, the group aimed to install 400-500 bricks for family members and friends wishing to honor deceased active-duty service members or veterans from any war era. According to the Department of Veterans Services, about 3,000 memorial bricks currently line sidewalks and pathways at the memorial.

The bricks that line the memorial walkways commemorate all United States veterans.

According to the David Westphall Veterans Foundation website, red bricks feature dates of service. "If there is no ending date that person is still serving. Two stars signify the person was killed in action. One star denotes missing in action."

Only one brick-laying ceremony is held at the memorial park each year. For more information about ordering a brick, call (575) 377-6900.
